Who we are

Who is Pioneer Energy?

Founded in 1920 and now owned by Central Lakes Trust, we’re committed to changing the way customers and communities use energy solutions. We invest in energy solutions to provide customers with alternatives to mainstream utilities for future generations.

Pioneer Energy has supplied renewable power to New Zealand businesses and communities for more than 80 years and in the last 10 years has diversified energy services capabilities to supply both heat and power markets. We own and operate wind farms and hydro schemes that generate enough clean energy to power around 33,000 homes each year and save the emissions of around 57,500 tonnes of carbon annually.

Our community roots are in our Central Lakes Trust ownership and extend to our partnerships with regional stakeholders and communities throughout New Zealand.

We look forward to working alongside our partners, Manawa Energy and the local community.

Who is Manawa Energy?

Manawa Energy is an NZX-listed company and Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest independent electricity generator and renewables developer. Our head office is in Tauranga, and we have 26 power schemes throughout New Zealand and generate around 5% of the country’s electricity.

Manawa (meaning ‘heart’ in te reo Māori) acknowledges our heritage establishing electricity generation on the Omanawa River in the Kaimai area during the 1900s. Our name was gifted by the Ngāti Hangarau hapū, mana whenua of the area where our Kaimai hydropower scheme is located.

We are developing new, renewable electricity generation opportunities to meet growing demand, and to support a thriving, low-emissions future. We have extensive experience developing and operating renewable energy assets, including pioneering the development of wind generation in New Zealand and Australia (when we were known as Trustpower).
